What a great idea! I was about to spend a fortune on a hotel for my partner and I to go to Wellington for a wedding, but found a fantastic house swap opportunity on the site. Easy peasy. No problems...

About us

Member ID: 13746

Our family consists of my husband Phil and I in our early 40's, and our almost 5 year old son. I am originally from down South, Phil from Gisborne, and we have lived in Gisborne and the Hibiscus Coast before settling in Wellington for the last 10+ years. We love to get away - and visit our many relatives and friends in different parts of the country, as well as explore new places. I am a former recruitment consultant now juggling stay-at-home parenting with part-time consulting, Phil is former police officer who now contracts as a Business Analyst Consultant in Wellington. We are a sporty, active family who love to get outdoors. We have a cat Minxy who is almost 1 year old.

Property description and facilities

Our unique, renovated mid-century 3 bedroom home with extensive views is set on the top of a ridge directly overlooking Lyall Bay, Pencarrow and Cook Strait with distance views towards Evan’s Bay/Wellington Harbour, and on a good day from the rear – the South Island. The views are jaw-dropping especially for first time visitors to our home. We live in one of the most sought after streets in Wellington, due to its breathtaking views.

Open plan kitchen, dining, lounge with polished rimu floors. Modern kitchen and bathroom. Carpet in the hallway and bedrooms. We enjoy all day sun – from sunrise in the east straight into our kitchen, living areas and front deck, through to late afternoon in lounge, 2 rear bedrooms and rear deck.

For the colder days we have a massive heatpump which heats the whole house, and underfloor insulation. Unlimited wifi, Smart TV and televisions in 2 of the bedrooms.

We live up a private right-of-way so away from the traffic. Drive on access for 1 car, and safe parking on the street. This is a very good and safe neighbourhood – all our neighbours are lovely but keep to themselves.

We do have a washing machine but it is located inside our garage - which is full of our stuff! So for our sake and yours we'd prefer to keep garage locked - however there are 2 self-service laundromats or 2 full service laundromats only 5 minutes drive away. Self service $4 for one wash or dry.

We love this area - particularly in summer! It’s an easy 10 minute stroll along the street and down a zig-zag walkway to Lyall Bay with all it has to offer – beach, cafes such as the famous Maranui, Queen Sally’s deli, The Botanist and Spruce Goose. You can also walk down to Houghton Bay around the South Coast bays to Island Bay, and Owhiro Bay, as well as taken in various walks in reserves and town belts. Its a 25 minute bus ride into town on the number 23 bus, which has a bus stop 50 metres from the end of the drive.

The airport is literally 7 minutes drive away – our place runs parallel from the runway with Lyall Bay between us. Not being on the actual flight path airport noise is minimal and only noticeable when the windows are open on take off or landing, and many visitors (including the little ones) get hours of entertainment watching the planes come and go.

Location description and facilities

We are located on a street that runs along the ridge overlooking Lyall Bay. Technically it's known as Melrose as its up on the hill, or Houghton Bay, but Houghton Bay is actually a few bays around.

Take in Te Papa, the Wellington waterfront, Cable Car and many other central sights. We are also only 10 minutes drive to Weta Workshops in Miramar which I can't recommend highly enough - their workshop tours are fantastic.

Supermarkets only 4 minutes drive, and Lyall Bay retail shopping centre nearby.

Pets to care for at this property

There may be pets to care for on this property.

We have a 1 year old black cat called Minxy. She has a microchip cat door that allows her to come and go at her leisure. She is fed morning and evening. She enjoys indoors and outdoors, but we keep her in at night and she insists on sleeping in our bedroom. We have a almost 5 year old son who gives her a bit of a hard time but she has never taken a swipe at him and very paitent, she just gets out of there. Loves company but on her own terms, she won't snuggle with you if you instigate it - it has to be on her terms!
