What a great idea! I was about to spend a fortune on a hotel for my partner and I to go to Wellington for a wedding, but found a fantastic house swap opportunity on the site. Easy peasy. No problems...

4 Review overall

We have done two house swaps with this lovely family. They have a quiet and restful home. It is very clean and warm. Great views and deck to sit out on. Beds are comfortable. Good communication and easy to swap with. Thanks for a great swap. Wylie family - James Wylie - Tuesday, 26 May 2015

About us

Member ID: 1285

We are a kiwi family with Mum, Dad and two kids (12 and 15 as of 2017). Non-smokers. We love our warm and picturesque spot in Mahina Bay, overlooking Wellington Harbour. We travel regularly to New Plymouth to see family and are desperately keen for Taranaki swaps. We also have family in Melbourne (East Bentleigh), Dunedin, Tauranga and Vanuatu we would love to visit more often. We plan to show our children around NZ more over the next few years. A trip around the South Island is planned for Dec/Jan 17/18. We enjoy relaxed holidays with access to outdoor activities such as walks, kayaking, bike rides etc.

Property description and facilities

The house is surrounded by bush and has stunning views, overlooking picturesque Wellington Harbour through to the sunsets on the Kaikouras. We see Tui, Kereru and colourful parakeets from our lounge and hear Ruru (Morepork) at night.

A three minute walk to the waterfront and a two-minute drive (15 min walk) to popular Days Bay where the ferry departs for Wellington City, Seatoun and Matiu-Somes Island. Days Bay provides Wellington's best swimming beach for children and hosts excellent local eateries, kayaks for hire in summer, and bush walks.

It is a 1940s house that has been extensively renovated in 2005 with great sun, super-insulation, double glazing and a woodburner with heat transfer system. The lounge, dining, kitchen area is large and free-flowing open plan, featuring a gourmet chef's oven and two decks that both get the sun until it sets. There are three bedrooms - master with queen bed downstairs, and 2 bedrooms upstairs (single beds, one with trundler). Stunning views from 2 bedrooms. There is also an office/studio downstairs with a single bed. A family bathroom (with bath and separate shower), separate toilet, separate laundry, (all upstairs) and double garage complete the package.

Location description and facilities

Locally, there are the charming bays of Days Bay, Lowry Bay, Rona Bay and the lovely Eastbourne village with antiques and gorgeous village shops, library, playground and a summer swimming pool. There are many great walks, either head south along the coast from 'Burden's Gate' to the south of Eastbourne (also a great off-road bike ride), or head up into the hills on the many Regional Park tracks. Not to mention enjoying the coastline, walking or getting on the water. Days Bay wharf is infamous for its safe 'wharf jump'. Kayaks are available for hire in summer. The East-by-West Ferry departs regularly from Days Bay. You can get off at historical Matiu-Somes Island, formerly a quarantine station and now a DOC reserve - it makes a great day-trip. Or you can continue on to explore the delights of Wellington City - Te papa, the lively waterfront area, and the shops of Lambton Quay are all within easy walking distance of Ferry terminal.

Alternatively head North to Lower Hutt - the famous Dowse Art Museum, Petone Settlers' Museum, cafes/restaurants, several swimming pools, rock climbing, an excellent children' indoor playground (Junglerama), indoor bowls, Westfield Queensgate Shopping mall - all within a 15 minute drive.
