What a great idea! I was about to spend a fortune on a hotel for my partner and I to go to Wellington for a wedding, but found a fantastic house swap opportunity on the site. Easy peasy. No problems...

About us

Member ID: 12046

We are a mature retired but energetic couple: John (former TV journalist and editor), Sheryl (designer and children's book writer) with home business. We live in Queensland, Australia much of the time, but have a home and adult families in Auckland, New Zealand and stay there regularly too. We found an idyllic home on an island off the Queensland coast and live now with the sea lapping at the bottom of the garden, feeding ourselves from a seemingly endless gardening season, and sharing out lives with wild birds, dolphins, dugong and the nicest human island friends a couple could want. We also travel in Asia, Australia and New Zealand when we can. We go back to NZ tour tour, see family and and do business regularly and are able to swop by arrangement. Our home is an old holiday cottage by the sea. We have renovated it, and are continuing to do so. We have created a bond with the bush, the birds and the sea and when we want, city life is only a 14 minute fast ferry trip away and its only fifty minutes drive to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. So far the sun is generally in blue skys and hot and winters are like Auckland summers. John continues to write and garden. Sheryl loves to design, write and build and we do all of that together. We also love to travel and to stay in other places. Home swap is a great way to do it.

Property description and facilities

We are Kiwis retired to Queensland where we have an idyllic cottage with a sea frontage on Lamb Island in Morton Bay, the island cluster on the Queensland coast between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

You may ask what you can do here? The short answer is "nothing". Its the sort of place to come and have the most relaxing holiday of your life, alone or with a couple of friends. Read, drink, eat, chat, swim, boat, watch TV, visit, travel, tour - everything is possible. But don't come if you don't want to relax and forget your other life.

We have renovated the cottage for our own use and spend most of our time there. Its a tiny, cute house with a main double bedroom and two beds for visitors on a mezzanine floor above the bedroom and bathroom along with a big vaulted lounge over two stories. There is a well finished kitchen and bathroom.

That's not all though. The property is small and covered in trees which attract a myriad of bird life and we are visited daily by Kookaburra's, lorikeets, cockatoos, curlews and pretty birds we have not identified yet which we feed from the deck. The nights are alive with the sounds of the tropics to the extent the birds may occasionally wake you. But the night sky is worth looking at as are the sunsets and moonscapes.

That's not all though. At the bottom of the garden is our beach .. its not a white sand island, but has small white pebbles and (in addition to stunning sea views) boasts a small foreshore forest of huge mature Australian mangroves - not the stunted NZ variety. You paddle the kayak through these and think you are in an enchanted forest. Beyond that is the sea - its tidal so when it goes out there are some long slow beaches which Kiwis might describe as mudflats ..but they are beautiful in themselves with ponds of many changing colours, sand banks in the water, hundreds of sea birds fishing and beyond that in channels of deep water leading to the other islands and on to other islands and the Coral Sea and eventually the Great Barrier Reef. At high tide the views are stunning and the swimming and boating a great warm water diversion.

This island is not white sand and coconut trees, but it is one of the most quiet, safe, relaxing places we have ever been. The bush, the birds, the sea, the sun and "island time" guarantee solitude and relaxation. Its proximity to the big city and white sand beaches make it a great base.

If you want the big city and white sands, you can get them in Brisbane to the North and Gold Coast to the south - realistically maybe an hour by ferry and motorway in either direction but the ferry trip is gorgeous and shot and the motorways efficient.

Location description and facilities

What is the main attraction to Lamb Island? Solitude, silence, beauty, birds, trees, sea, beach and "island time". This is a place for a totally relaxed holiday - don't come here if you MUST do something. It's an island - its quiet, and lovely. Its Queensland - it's hot, it's lush, it's sunny but its isolated and is a place you walk, read, watch TV, swim, drink, make friends, sleep, and go home relaxed and refreshed and probably having put down a deposit on the very cheap properties here!

HOWEVER, this island is 14 minutes to the mainland (Redland Bay) south of Brisbane by fast regular ferries (you sometimes see dolphins). If you hire a car and leave it at Redland Bay you can use our car on the island (its only 2 km long and 1km wide) and commute. From Redland Bay you can drive in 50 minutes North to Brisbane and South to the Gold Coast and to other great Queensland Locations. Australia Zoo, Gold Coast Beaches, Dreamworld and other theme parks are on the way.

So with planning (we can help you with that) you can do a load of other things while you are here. For $100 you can also bring you car to the island and back to the mainland by regular vehicle ferry, but its probably not necessary as we have a car on the island for your use there.

Oh .. and the regular ferries also go to other unique remote places on other islands providing wonderful memories and beautiful views.
